Lightsaber Features Explained: Smooth Swing, Flash on Clash, Soundfonts, and More
Anyone using a lightsaber for the first time will quickly come across all sorts of terms like “Smooth Swing,” “Flash on Clash,” “soundfonts,” “motion control,” “blade styles,” “ignition effects,” “lock-up,” “blaster deflect,” and much more. But what do all these lightsaber features actually mean? How do you notice them while using the lightsaber? And which effects make the biggest difference with a Baselit or Neopixel lightsaber?
In this comprehensive guide, we explain the most important lightsaber features and effects step by step. This way, you'll know exactly what these terms mean and can more easily determine which lightsaber and soundboard are right for you.
What are the functions of a lightsaber?
A lightsaber combines light, sound, and motion sensors to recreate the experience of a lightsaber from the Star Wars movies as realistically as possible.
Depending on the soundboard you choose, a saber may feature, among other things:
Smooth Swing;
various soundfonts;
multiple colors;
Flash on Clash;
blaster-effecten;
blade lock-up;
tip drag;
motion control;
various blade styles;
various ignition and startup effects;
background music;
adjustable volume;
Bluetooth control;
Adjustable brightness and motion sensitivity.
The available features vary depending on whether you have a Baselit, Neopixel, or Proffie soundboard. The way an effect is displayed may also vary.
1. What is Smooth Swing?
Smooth Swing is one of the most important features of a lightsaber. With older or simpler electronic lightsabers, you often hear a limited number of preset swinging sounds when you move the saber. With Smooth Swing, the sound responds much more smoothly to the actual movement of the hilt.
If you move the saber slowly, the sound changes subtly. If you make a quick swing, the swinging sound becomes clearer and more powerful.
As a result, the sound seems to move much more naturally along with the saber.
Why is Smooth Swing important?
It ensures that the lightsaber not only glows but also actually responds to how you use it. All of our lightsabers have this feature. The exact experience and customization options vary by soundboard.
2. What is Accent Swing?
"Accent Swing" refers to additional or more pronounced swing sounds that are triggered when you make a distinct or faster movement.
Smooth Swing provides the fluid, fundamental response during movement. Accent Swing, as it were, adds an extra layer of emphasis on top of that as the movement becomes more powerful.
Consider, for example, the difference between:
rotate the saber gently;
make a quick profit;
Perform a powerful horizontal swing.
With such a faster movement, a more distinct accent sound can be played.
Smooth Swing and Accent Swing work together to make movements sound more dynamic.
3. What is Flash on Clash?
Flash on Clash, often abbreviated as FOC, is the light effect that is triggered when the lightsaber detects a collision or impact.
For example, when you strike two lightsabers together, the saber responds by:
a bright light or flash effect;
a crashing sound.
This simulates the effect you're familiar with from lightsaber duels.
Does Flash on Clash work with Baselit and Neopixel?
Yes, Flash on Clash appears on both Baselit and Neopixel lightsabers, but the display differs.
In a " " Baselit lightsaber, the blade is illuminated from within the emitter. As a result, the color or brightness of the light may change during a clash.
A Neopixel lightsaber features LEDs along the entire length of the blade. This allows for more elaborate and localized light effects.
4. What is Blaster Deflect or Blaster Block?
Another well-known lightsaber feature is Blaster Deflect, also known as Blaster Block. This feature simulates the deflecting of a blaster shot. When you activate the effect, you’ll hear a corresponding sound, and a brief light effect will appear on the blade. This is based on the iconic scene from Star Wars in which Jedi deflect incoming blaster shots with their lightsabers.
With Neopixel lightsabers, the lighting effects can be rendered much more precisely than with a traditional Baselit lightsaber, thanks to the individual LEDs in the blade. This can be fun for cosplay, demonstrations, videos, and practicing choreography, for example.
5. What is Blade Lock-up?
Blade Lock-up, often simply called “lock-up,” simulates the moment when two lightsaber blades are pressed against each other for an extended period during a duel. Instead of a single brief clash, during a lock-up the saber continues to play an intense clash sound and display a corresponding light effect. This creates the effect of two lightsabers continuously striking each other during a showdown.
With a Neopixel blade, the LEDs can produce a more dynamic lock-up effect.
6. What is Tip Drag?
Tip Drag is an effect that gives the impression that the tip of a lightsaber is dragging across a surface, heating it up or causing it to melt. With a compatible Neopixel lightsaber, the effect is primarily displayed at the tip of the blade. You’ll also see a different lighting effect around the tip of the blade and hear a corresponding sound.
Tip Drag is also known as a "melt effect." It is primarily a visual effect. Of course, you don't actually have to drag the saber across a floor, wall, or other surface to use it.
7. What is motion control in a lightsaber?
Motion control, gesture control, or motion-based control means that certain functions can be activated by moving the lightsaber instead of just pressing a button.
Depending on the soundboard, movements can be used, for example, to:
to turn on the lightsaber;
to turn off the lightsaber;
to switch soundfonts;
to activate certain effects.
A common movement, for example, is a quick twisting motion with the hilt. Motion control makes it easier to operate the saber during cosplay, spinning, or demonstrations, and it also looks more natural. That way, you don’t always have to search for the button on the hilt first.
Can you adjust the motion control?
On compatible X3 soundboards, you can adjust the sensitivity of the motion controls using the Bluetooth app. This is useful when, for example, a lightsaber responds too easily or, conversely, too difficultly to a movement.
8. What is a soundfont?
A soundfont is the collection of sounds that determines how a lightsaber sounds. A soundfont typically contains multiple sound types that together form a single style, for example:
the constant humming sound;
swing sounds;
clash-geluiden;
ignition sound;
retraction sound;
blaster-effecten;
lock-up effects.
By switching soundfonts, the same lightsaber can suddenly take on a completely different look and feel. Some soundfonts are crisp and clear, while others are dark, aggressive, electric, or unstable.
Soundfont vs. Sound Effect
A soundfont isn’t just a single sound. It’s better to think of it as a complete sound set in which all the effects are coordinated. Think, for example, of “The Dark Sword,” “The Chosen One,” or “The Dark Lord.” When you switch to a different soundfont, all of these matching sounds, effects, and tones change along with it. As a result, the same lightsaber can suddenly sound and feel completely different.
9. What are blade styles?
A blade style determines how the light from a lightsaber blade appears during normal use. This is particularly relevant for Neopixel lightsabers, because the LEDs throughout the entire blade can be controlled individually. As a result, instead of just a single constant color, various animations and patterns can be displayed.
Common blade styles include, for example:
- Stable: An evenly lit lightsaber blade without any noticeable animations. This comes closest to a classic, calm lightsaber.
- Pulse: The brightness of the blade changes subtly, making it appear as if the light is pulsing.
- Unstable: Anunstable blade has a more erratic, flickering light effect. This gives the lightsaber a more aggressive and unstable appearance. The effect is reminiscent of the well-known chaotic appearance of some lightsabers from Star Wars.
- Rainbow: In a rainbow blade style, different colors move across the sword blade. This is less true to the movie, but it clearly demonstrates the technical capabilities of the individual LEDs in a Neopixel blade.
- Fire: A blade style with a moving, flame-like light effect.
- Wave: A moving light effect that travels across the blade like a wave.
Depending on the soundboard, other blade styles may also be available.
10. What is an Unstable Blade?
With an "unstable" effect, the sword blade is not completely steady and evenly lit. The light appears to flicker, pulse, or move erratically. This creates a rougher, more raw look.
An "unstable blade" style is especially popular among:
Sith lightsabers;
dark, character-inspired designs;
cosplay;
photos and videos;
A Neopixel blade is ideal for this because the light can be controlled along the entire length of the blade.
11. What are ignition effects and start-up styles?
When you turn on a classic lightsaber, you see the blade light up from the hilt upward. With Neopixel lightsabers, this ignition can be displayed in various ways. These animations are referred to as ignition effects, startup effects, or startup styles, among other terms.
Depending on the soundboard, the blade can, for example:
light up quickly from the bottom to the top;
slow ignition;
light up in several stages;
activate it with a special animation effect.
Turning off the blade can also be accompanied by a corresponding retraction animation.
Why is Neopixel better at this?
A Neopixel lightsaber has LEDs running the entire length of the blade. This means that the entire blade doesn't have to be lit up at the same time. The LEDs can be controlled in different sequences, allowing for elaborate startup effects.
12. What is the difference between a blade style and an ignition style?
These two terms are often confused. The difference is simple:
- Blade style: determines what the lightsaber blade looks like when the lightsaber is active.
- Ignition or startup style: determines how the blade lights up when you turn on the lightsaber.
For example, you can combine an "unstable" blade style with a specific startup style. So one determines the permanent appearance, while the other determines the animation when the game starts.
13. Changing Lightsaber Colors
KenJo Sabers aren't limited to a single, fixed lightsaber color. You can switch between different colors for all lightsabers, allowing you to choose the color that best suits your saber, cosplay, or personal preference.
For example:
blue;
green;
red;
purple;
yellow;
orange;
white;
various shades in between.
That means you don't have to make a final choice at the time of purchase between, for example, a blue Jedi lightsaber and a red Sith lightsaber.
RGB vs. Neopixel Color
With Baselit, the color is created by the RGB lighting coming from the hilt. With Neopixel, the light is produced by the LEDs in the blade itself.
Both systems can display multiple colors, but Neopixel also offers a more extensive set of animations and lighting effects.
14. What is the background music for a lightsaber?
In addition to the standard lightsaber sounds, some soundboards feature background music. This music can play while you're using the lightsaber. It is separate from the standard hum, swing, and clash sounds. The music available depends on the soundboard and the files that are installed.
15. Volume and Mute Function
A lightsaber can be quite loud. Fortunately, all KenJo Sabers feature different volume settings and a mute or silent mode. This is useful when you want to record videos without sound or are at an event where maximum volume isn't desirable.
On compatible X3 models, you can adjust the volume more precisely using the app.
16. Bluetooth Control via the Xeno Configurator
The Premium RGB Baselit X3 and Premium Neopixel X3 can be paired with the Xeno Configurator app via Bluetooth.
This allows you to control many settings from your smartphone without having to adjust everything using button combinations on the handle. Depending on the soundboard, the app lets you, among other things:
turning the saber on and off;
choose the color;
adjust the volume;
Select blade styles;
Choose startup styles;
How to use Flash on Clash;
Activate lock-up;
Use the Drag tip;
Adjust motion control sensitivity;
set brightness;
Configure settings.
For users who want to experiment a lot with settings, Bluetooth control is a handy addition.
17. What is the brightness setting?
With compatible Neopixel/X3 configurations, the blade brightness—that is, the brightness of the sword blade—can be adjusted. A higher brightness naturally produces the most impressive lighting effect.
Lower brightness can be useful when:
you are inside a dark room;
you want to conserve your battery life;
you use the saber for photography;
Full brightness is simply not necessary.
You can adjust this setting directly in the Xeno Configurator.
18. What does "blade length" mean in the settings?
With some Neopixel soundboards, you can also set the blade length in the software. This tells the soundboard how many LEDs or which part of the Neopixel blade to control. This is especially important when using a Neopixel blade of a different size than the standard 92 cm blades.
The blade length you set must match the sword blade so that effects and animations play correctly along its entire length.
19. What is Proffie, and why are there even more effects available there?
Proffie is an advanced Neopixel soundboard for users who want to customize their lightsaber in great detail. While X3 focuses primarily on easy configuration via settings and an app, Proffie offers much more advanced capabilities.
For example, you can create detailed:
blade styles;
ignition effects;
soundfonts;
color settings;
gesture controls;
effect combinations
configure.
A Proffie soundboard does require a lot of technical knowledge, which is why we generally do not recommend this soundboard to our customers. Adjustments are not simply made through a user-friendly app, but involve configurations and coding.
That is why, in most cases, we do not recommend Proffie for beginners or users who mainly want to easily adjust colors, sounds, and effects. For that purpose, Premium Neopixel X3 is much more accessible and user-friendly.
If you do decide to go with Proffie, it’s important that you have sufficient technical knowledge and are willing to familiarize yourself with the configuration and programming environment. KenJo Sabers cannot provide support for writing, modifying, or troubleshooting Proffie code and configurations.
Proffie is therefore particularly well-suited for experienced hobbyists who want maximum freedom and are able to handle the technical configuration on their own.
20. What lightsaber features are available on Baselit?
An RGB Baselit lightsaber is illuminated from the hilt. Depending on the Baselit soundboard you choose, you’ll have access to features such as:
Smooth Swing;

volume settings;
motion control;
background music.
With the Premium RGB Baselit X3, Bluetooth control via the Xeno Configurator is also included. So the Baselit is certainly not the same as a simple lightsaber without effects. You still get sound, color-changing capabilities, and interactive features. The main technical difference is that the blade is illuminated from the hilt rather than by an integrated LED strip.
21. What additional features do you get with Neopixel?
A Neopixel lightsaber features an LED strip running the entire length of the blade. This allows for effects that cannot be reproduced in the same way with a Baselit blade.
Be sure to keep the following in mind:
more varied blade styles;
progressive ignition effects;
retraction animations;
local lighting effects;
Tip: Drag;
more extensive lock-up and blaster effects;
greater clarity along the entire length of the blade.
In addition, Neopixel naturally also offers features such as Smooth Swing, soundfonts, color-changing, and clash effects.

This is a good choice if you want to combine a lot of features with a simple and sturdy blade. Features include color changes, sound effects, Smooth Swing, and clash effects.
Premium RGB Baselit X3
Baselit with additional configuration options and Bluetooth control.
Premium Neopixel X3
This is a good choice if, in addition to sound and Smooth Swing, you want a wide variety of blade styles, ignition effects, and other Neopixel effects, but still want to be able to easily adjust the settings.
Proffie
Suitable for advanced users who are looking for maximum freedom and are willing to invest time in technical configuration.

For intensive use, a Baselit can be an excellent choice, while Neopixel really shines when it comes to extensive lighting effects. If you want to easily adjust a wide range of settings, the Premium Neopixel X3 is a very comprehensive and user-friendly choice. For maximum technical customization, Proffie is the most comprehensive option.
