Introduction: how does a lightsaber get its colour?
A lightsaber is an iconic weapon from the Star Wars universe used by Jedi and Sith. A kyber crystal helps focus the weapon's energy and determines the blade's colour. It is not a battery that stores the Force. Kyber crystals are connected to the Force and gain their colour through their bond with their user. A red blade results when a dark-side user makes a crystal ‘bleed’.
The Jedi search for kyber crystals on the planet Ilum. They embark on a spiritual journey to find the crystal that suits them. The Sith, on the other hand, often steal kyber crystals from the Jedi or find them in other ways. The process of building a Star Wars lightsaber is an important ritual for both Jedi and Sith, as it connects them to the Force and their own identity as Force users.

What colors of lightsabers are there and what do these lightsaber colors mean?
Blue
Blue is one of the best-known Jedi lightsaber colours. Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi wield blue lightsabers, for example in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Rey uses the blue Skywalker saber in The Force Awakens. Calm, loyalty and determination are fitting fan associations, but blue does not automatically define a Jedi's personality or role.
If you choose a blue lightsaber, you are likely someone loyal to friends and family, determined to keep the peace and do what is right. You have a strong sense of discipline and are willing to work hard to achieve your goals. Choosing a blue lightsaber means you are a determined Jedi, willing to fight for justice and peace in the universe.
Green
The green lightsaber is known from Luke Skywalker, Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn. Luke uses his own green lightsaber in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, after losing his father's blue saber in The Empire Strikes Back. Qui-Gon fights with a green blade in The Phantom Menace.
If you choose a green lightsaber, you are likely someone who strives for balance and harmony, and has a strong connection to nature and the environment.
Red
The red lightsaber is associated with the Sith and other users of the dark side. Red is created by corrupting a kyber crystal: making the crystal ‘bleed’. Darth Vader, Darth Sidious and Darth Maul use red blades. Maul's double-bladed lightsaber appears in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Kylo Ren uses a red crossguard lightsaber in The Force Awakens.
If you choose a red lightsaber, you're likely someone drawn to power and control, even if it means breaking the rules. You're often impulsive and tend to let your emotions take over. However, this can lead to a strong inner strength and self-confidence. Choosing a red lightsaber means you've chosen the side of the Sith and are willing to embrace the dark side of the Force.
Purple
The purple lightsaber is best known from Mace Windu, including during the arena battle in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. Actor Samuel L. Jackson asked George Lucas for a purple blade. The colour makes Windu recognisable, but it does not officially mean that he is half Jedi and half Sith.
In short, if you choose a purple lightsaber, you're probably someone who isn't afraid to go your own way and isn't constrained by traditions and conventions. You're a unique and independent spirit, but you're also loyal to the values that matter to you.
Yellow
The yellow lightsaber is used by Jedi Temple Guards in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Rey reveals her own yellow lightsaber at the end of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Protection and a new beginning fit well with these examples.
White
White lightsabers are characteristic of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka. Her blades turn white because she purifies red kyber crystals. Ahsoka was not a Sith who changed sides: she left the Jedi Order. Kanan Jarrus uses a blue blade, not a white one. Purification and following her own path are fitting associations with Ahsoka's story.
Black (Darksaber)
The black lightsaber is called the Darksaber, a unique weapon with a glowing white edge. Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi, created it. He was not a Sith and did not found Death Watch. After his death, the Jedi kept the weapon; members of House Vizsla later took it from the Jedi Temple. The Darksaber became a symbol of Mandalorian leadership. It appears in The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian, wielded by characters such as Pre Vizsla, Darth Maul, Sabine Wren, Din Djarin, Moff Gideon and Bo-Katan Kryze. A black blade does not automatically indicate allegiance to the dark side. Read more in our Darksaber guide.
Orange
Orange lightsabers are seen with Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati in the series Ahsoka. If you see yourself as an explorer and a practical person, an orange lightsaber may suit you.
Brown
Brown is not a common lightsaber colour in the Star Wars films and series and does not have a fixed meaning there for diplomacy or a Jedi class. If you see yourself as a peaceful person and someone who likes to resolve conflicts without violence, a brown lightsaber may suit you.
Grey
A grey lightsaber is not an official designation for a Jedi who stands between the light and dark side. If you see yourself as someone who does not like being put in boxes and can weigh different perspectives, grey may suit you as a personal colour choice.
Pink
Pink does not have a fixed meaning for diplomacy, love or a particular group. Pink is a personal style choice and is not tied to gender or a specific Jedi role. If you choose a pink lightsaber, you are probably a warm person who is emotionally involved with others and strongly believes in the good in people. You may also be an independent thinker who chooses your own path instead of following the crowd.
Light blue
If you like a calm, bright appearance, light blue may suit you as a personal colour choice.

Choosing a Star Wars lightsaber starts with what you like: a favourite colour, character or hilt. Adjustable RGB Baselit and Neopixel versions let you change the blade colour; controls and available settings vary by soundboard. You do not have to rely only on the colour in a product photo. Check the product page for the version that suits you. An LED saber imitates a blade's light: a truly black, glowing blade like the Darksaber cannot be selected as an ordinary LED colour.
Above all, choose a lightsaber that suits your favourite Star Wars character and your own style. May the Force be with you!
