The length and type of blade affect the weight, balance, maneuverability, brightness, light effects, and how comfortable the lightsaber feels during dueling, spinning, cosplay, or display.
But which lightsaber blade do you need? Should you choose a Baselit blade or a Neopixel blade? Is an 82-cm blade more comfortable than a 92-cm one? Does every lightsaber blade fit every lightsaber? And can you shorten a lightsaber blade yourself?

Which lightsaber blade do I need? The short answer
Which lightsaber blade is best for you depends mainly on five things:
Your lightsaber's system: Baselit or Neopixel.
The blade's diameter: usually 1 inch / approximately 25 mm, but some sabers use a narrower blade.
The length of the sword blade: for example, 92 cm or 82 cm.
The hilt and insertion depth: part of the blade actually disappears into the emitter.
What you want to use it for: dueling, spinning, cosplay, display, dual-wielding, or saberstaff.
For most users, the blade that comes standard is a good all-around choice. However, those looking for maximum maneuverability or who use a long hilt may actually benefit greatly from a shorter blade.
Below, we explain all the differences in detail.
1. What is a lightsaber blade?
The blade is the illuminated sword blade that is inserted into the emitter of the lightsaber hilt. Most modern lightsaber blades are made of strong polycarbonate. The main difference, however, lies on the inside.
There are two main systems:
Baselit blades: hollow sword blades through which light shines inward from the hilt.
Neopixel blades: sword blades with LEDs embedded along the length of the blade itself.
That difference affects the weight, the light effects, the price, and how the blade is used.
2. Baselit blade or Neopixel blade: What’s the difference?
The first question is always: What system does your lightsaber use?
A Baselit blade and a Neopixel blade look similar on the outside, but they work completely differently from a technical standpoint.

3. What is a Baselit lightsaber blade?
In a Baselit lightsaber, the powerful LED is located in the hilt. The light shines upward from the emitter through a hollow polycarbonate blade. Inside the blade is a foil that helps distribute the light as evenly as possible across the blade. Because there are no electronics inside the blade itself, a Baselit blade is relatively lightweight.
You'll notice this especially during:
rapid movements;
long-term training sessions;
spinning;
choreography;
engaging in intense duels.
In the current KenJo Sabers, a sturdy polycarbonate wall approximately 2 mm thick is typically used for Baselit blades.
Benefits of a Baselit blade
A Baselit blade is a good choice if you:
you want a sword blade that is as light as possible;
want to spin a lot;
want to train for an extended period of time;
want to duel intensely;
want an affordable replacement blade;
be able to shorten the sword blade itself.
The downside is that the light comes from a single point in the handle. As a result, sophisticated localized lighting effects—such as those produced by Neopixels—are not possible.
4. What is a Neopixel lightsaber blade?
A Neopixel blade contains LEDs along nearly its entire length. So the light doesn't just come from the hilt—the lighting is actually built into the blade itself. This allows a Neopixel lightsaber to display much more elaborate effects, such as:
progressive ignition;
retraction effects;
blade styles;
unstable blade;
local blaster effects;
lock-up;
Tip: Drag;
various animations.
At KenJo Sabers, the standard Neopixel blades have a sturdy polycarbonate wall that’s about 3 mm thick. This makes the blade durable, but the thicker wall and electronics also make it heavier than a Baselit blade.

considers extensive lighting effects to be important;

5. What length of lightsaber blade should you choose?
After the blade type, the length of the lightsaber blade is probably the most important choice. A longer blade offers greater reach and the classic full-size lightsaber look. A shorter blade, on the other hand, feels more compact and agile.
The available sizes are:
92 cm
82 cm
72 cm
62 cm
The available sizes may vary by blade and lightsaber. Many KenJo lightsabers come standard with a blade that is approximately 92 cm long, while some models or configurations use, for example, an 82 cm blade. Therefore, always check the specifications on the product page for the lightsaber in question.
6. A 92-cm or 82-cm lightsaber blade?
This is probably the most common question about lightsaber blade length. There is no single "best" size. Both have clear advantages.
Lightsaber blade, 92 cm long
A blade measuring approximately 92 cm gives the saber the classic, long look that many people expect from a full-size lightsaber.
Advantages:
wide range;
impressive appearance;
good proportions with standard or shorter hilts;
ideal for displays and cosplay;
Great for users who prefer a longer saber.
For most adults, a full-size blade is a great place to start.
Lightsaber blade, 82 cm long
An 82-centimeter lightsaber blade is about ten centimeters shorter and therefore feels noticeably more compact.
That might be more convenient for:
spinning;
rapid movements;
for indoor use;
smaller spaces;
long hilts;
dual-wield;
saberstaff;
users who find a full-size blade a bit too big.
A shorter blade also shifts the weight slightly closer to your hands. This difference in balance can be particularly noticeable with Neopixel, where the electronics are located inside the blade.
Is 82 cm less realistic than 92 cm?
Not necessarily.
The correct proportions also depend on the hilt. A long hilt with a slightly shorter blade can actually look more balanced than the same hilt with the longest possible blade.
Therefore, always check the total length of the lightsaber, not just the number listed next to the blade.
7. A 72 cm or 62 cm lightsaber blade: when is that useful?
Even shorter blades may be useful for specific applications.
For example:
a more compact saber;
smaller users;
a shoto-style setup;
dual-wield;
a saber staff;
training in a small space;
very fast spinning.
KenJo Sabers may also have shorter Neopixel blades in stock or available upon request. Current stock levels and delivery times may vary by size.
For a standard single-blade lightsaber, we don't automatically recommend choosing the shortest length possible. A short blade significantly changes the balance, reach, and feel of the saber.
8. What blade length is right for your height?
There is no hard-and-fast rule such as, “This body height corresponds exactly to this blade length.” Personal preference plays a major role. However, in practice, the following applies:
Long-term user:
A longer blade usually feels more natural and maintains a visually pleasing proportion.
Smaller user:
A shorter blade may be easier to control and prevents the tip from hitting the ground quickly during movements.
But blade length isn't the only thing that matters. A user of the same height might find a 92 cm blade with a short hilt to be perfect, while a long, two-handed hilt with the same blade might feel too big. That's why we recommend also considering the hilt length and blade depth.
9. Please note: a 92-cm blade does not extend 92 cm from the hilt
This is often overlooked. That’s because part of the blade is slid into the hilt’s emitter . So you can’t see that part when the lightsaber is assembled. Therefore, you calculate the total length as follows:
hilt length + blade length – blade depth = total length of the lightsaber
The blade depth, —also known as blade depth or blade insertion depth—varies by hilt and sometimes even by the selected soundboard. That is why KenJo Sabers includes the following information in the specifications for many lightsabers:
length of the hilt;
length of the blade;
blade depth;
diameter of the blade.
With this information, you can much more accurately determine in advance how big your entire lightsaber will actually be.
10. Why is the blade depth important?
The blade depth ( ) determines how much of the blade is housed within the emitter. This affects not only the overall length but also the stability. Generally speaking, the more securely the blade is supported within a properly designed emitter, the more stable the connection will be during movement and contact.
However, the exact construction varies greatly from one lightsaber to another. For example, due to their design, some character-inspired hilts have a different emitter construction than a simple, straight duel hilt. Therefore, when using your lightsaber intensively, be sure to check not only the blade length but also the specifications and mounting of the lightsaber itself.
11. What is the best blade length for spinning?
Agility is important for lightsaber spinning.
A shorter and lighter blade:
has a smaller turning radius;
is easier to use indoors;
can change direction more quickly;
reduces the sensation of weight on the outside;
is less likely to hit the ground.
That's why an 82-cm blade for spinning may be more comfortable than a longer, full-size blade.
That doesn't mean you can't spin with a 92 cm blade. Many users do so without any problems. But if you find that the saber feels long or cumbersome during spins, a shorter blade is one of the easiest ways to change the handling.
Baselit or Neopixel for spinning?
For maximum speed and the lightest possible setup, Baselit has an advantage because its blade is hollow and lighter.
If you want maximum brightness, spectacular effects, and realistic ignition during your spins, then Neopixel is more impressive.
12. Which lightsaber blade is best for dueling?
When it comes to dueling, you have to consider more than just height.
The following are important:
sturdiness of the blade;
weight;
balance sheet;
mounting in the hilt;
freedom of movement;
available space;
the intensity of your workouts.
Baselit for dueling
A Baselit blade has no electronics in the blade itself, making it technically the simplest choice for long-term and very intensive use. Its lighter weight is also a plus during long training sessions.
Neopixel for dueling
A Neopixel blade does contain electronics, but that doesn’t mean it’s automatically fragile. KenJo Sabers’ Neopixel blades are made of sturdy polycarbonate and are designed to withstand duels. Do you want both impressive lighting effects and the ability to duel? Then Neopixel is an excellent all-around choice.

Long or short blade for dueling?
A longer blade provides greater reach.
A shorter version is:
faster;
more agile;
easier in small spaces;
often easier to manage.
Which one is better, therefore, depends largely on your style.
13. What blade length is suitable for a saber staff?
With a saber staff, you have a blade at both ends. This drastically changes the overall size. Two long blades, combined with a double hilt, can create a very long setup. It looks impressive, but it also requires a lot of space and control. For spinning with a saber staff, it can therefore be preferable to use shorter blades.
Advantages:
smaller turning radius;
less likely to hit the ground;
easier indoors;
less weight at both ends.
This is especially true for sabers with two Neopixel blades, since you’ll have the extra weight of the LED strips on both sides. Some models have a single blade but can still be converted into a lightsaber staff by using a Connector Ring or Quick Release Connector. There are also lightsabers that already come with a built-in connector ring.

14. What blade length is best for dual-wielding?
With dual-wielding, you use two separate lightsabers at the same time. Here, too, a shorter blade can be advantageous. With two long blades, you have to take the following into account:
more space;
larger movements;
more weight;
There is a greater chance that the two blades will collide with each other during movement.
A compact blade can make dual-wielding smoother. Of course, those who prioritize cosplay or appearance can still choose to use two full-size blades.
15. Which lightsaber blade is best for cosplay?
When it comes to cosplay, other factors come into play. The most important ones here are:
appearance;
clarity;
the character's recognizability;
weight during long convention days;
available space;
photography and video.
If you want the most impressive lighting and effects, a Neopixel blade is usually the best choice. If you want a lighter saber that you can hold for hours or use during choreography, Baselit might be the better option.
Besides, for cosplay, a blade doesn't always have to be as long as possible. A slightly shorter blade can be much more practical at crowded conventions.
16. Which blade is best for display?
For a lightsaber that’s primarily part of a collection, the priorities are different than when it’s used for dueling. In that case, the following are of particular interest:
visual proportion;
clarity;
blade effects;
color reproduction.
A full-size Neopixel blade creates the most impressive look when you display the lightsaber with the blade activated. If you only want to display the hilt, you obviously don’t need a full blade at all. A blade plug can neatly finish off the emitter in that case.

17. What diameter lightsaber blade do you need?
It's not just the length that matters. The blade must also have the correct diameter for the emitter. A commonly used standard is:
1 inch / approximately 25 mm
Many KenJo Sabers use this standard size. However, there are also hilts that use a narrower 7/8-inch blade.
A blade of the wrong size won't fit properly in the emitter. Therefore, always check the specifications of your lightsaber before purchasing a separate or replacement blade. This information is usually listed on the product page under: Blade Type
For example: Standard 1 inch / 25 mm
18. 1-inch vs. 7/8-inch blade: What's the difference?
A narrower blade has less material and can therefore feel lighter and sleeker. This can be a good fit for, for example:
slimmer hilts;
certain character-inspired lightsabers;
spinning;
designs in which a thinner blade looks more proportionate.
A 1-inch blade is actually the most common standard size in the KenJo Sabers lineup. Important: Don’t choose the diameter based solely on personal preference. The emitter in the hilt determines which diameter fits. So you can’t just use a 7/8-inch blade in every 1-inch hilt, or vice versa.
19. How thick is a lightsaber blade?
In addition to its outer diameter, a blade also has a specific wall thickness. Many of the current models from KenJo Sabers use:
approximately 2 mm wall thickness for Baselit blades;
Neopixel blades have a wall thickness of approximately 3 mm.
The thicker Neopixel construction adds to the sturdiness, but—along with the internal electronics—it also adds extra weight. The exact specifications may vary by blade or model. Therefore, always check the product information for your lightsaber.
20. Why does a Neopixel blade feel heavier?
A Baselit blade is essentially a hollow polycarbonate tube. A Neopixel blade also contains:
LED strips;
wiring and internal components;
a connector on the bottom;
usually a sturdier construction.
As a result, more weight is distributed across the blade. And precisely because this weight is farther from your hand, you notice it quite clearly when swinging. A Neopixel saber can therefore have slightly more momentum during swings, while a Baselit saber often feels faster and lighter. This isn’t a matter of better or worse. It’s mainly a different experience.
21. Can I shorten a Baselit blade?
Yes. A Baselit sword blade can be shortened relatively easily because there are no electronic components inside the blade. For example, if you want to turn a long blade into a shorter spinning blade, you can trim the polycarbonate from the bottom. It’s best to use a fine-toothed saw for this, such as a fine-toothed hacksaw. Keep a few things in mind while doing so:
Measure carefully beforehand;
cut from the bottom;
Make sure the new bottom edge is straight;
Remove sawdust;
Carefully smooth out any sharp or uneven edges;
Leave the internal light-diffusing film in the blade.

22. Can I cut a Neopixel strip to size?
No! You can't shorten a Neopixel blade the same way you would a Baselit blade. In the Neopixel sword blade, LED strips and electronics run the entire length of the blade. Simply sawing off a piece of the blade would damage these electronic components.
If you want a shorter Neopixel blade, choose a blade in the desired length—such as 82 cm, 72 cm, or 62 cm—right away .
23. Did you install a shorter Neopixel blade? Be sure to check the blade length in the settings as well.
With a Neopixel lightsaber, the physical length isn't the only thing that matters. The soundboard also needs to know how long the connected blade is. This is important because the system controls the LEDs along the blade.
If the set blade length does not match the mounted sword blade, effects may not be displayed correctly. For example, you may notice that:
does not illuminate the entire blade correctly;
animations do not play smoothly over their entire length.
With compatible X3 soundboards, the blade length can be easily adjusted using the Xeno Configurator app. So, if you’re using a Neopixel blade of a different length, always check afterward to make sure the setting in your soundboard is correct.
24. Does a Baselit blade fit on a Neopixel lightsaber?
Not directly. A Baselit saber and a Neopixel saber use different lighting systems. With Baselit, the light is located in the hilt. With Neopixel, the hilt makes contact with the electronics in the blade. Therefore, a standard Baselit blade cannot simply perform the same function when you place it in a Neopixel saber.
Special Pixel-to-RGB converters are available for certain Premium Neopixel X3 systems, but this is a technical workaround and not our standard recommendation. The converter changes the connection and may also affect how deeply the blade fits into the hilt.
Do you want to switch between different types of blades? If so, always check first to see what options your specific saber offers.
25. Does every Neopixel blade fit every Neopixel saber?
Here, too, the answer is: not automatically. Be sure to check the following, among other things:
diameter;
physical connection;
length;
emitter;
blade depth;
Neopixel system type.
A standard Neopixel blade from the KenJo lineup is compatible with various pixel soundboards, including multiple Neopixel and Proffie configurations, as long as the physical blade connection and size match. However, if you’re using a non-standard saber, never rely solely on the term “Neopixel”. Check the product specifications.
26. How do you install a lightsaber blade?
Slide the blade into the emitter at the top of the hilt. Make sure the blade retention screws have been loosened sufficiently first. Then gently slide the blade straight in until it is properly seated.
With Neopixels, it’s especially important that the connector on the bottom of the blade makes good contact with the contact points in the hilt. Then secure the blade using the mounting screws provided. Tighten them firmly enough to prevent the blade from moving, but don’t apply unnecessary force.
27. What are blade retention screws?
Blade retention screws are the small screws used to secure the saber blade to the emitter. They prevent the blade from moving out of the hilt during swinging, spinning, or dueling. Depending on the saber, there may be one or more attachment points.
Before intensive use, always check to make sure the blade is securely fastened. Replacement mounting screws are also available separately.
28. What is a Daylight blade?
Of course, a standard lightsaber is most impressive in a dark or dimly lit environment. During the day, the light from the blade has to compete with much more ambient light. A Daylight blade is therefore designed to make the color more visible even in brighter conditions.
KenJo Sabers offers several Daylight models. In a Daylight blade, color is used in or around the blade itself so that the sword displays a specific color more clearly even without complete darkness.
This may be of interest to:
out of service;
cosplay;
daytime events;
photography;
dueling in a well-lit environment.
29. What is a Daylight Neopixel blade?
If you want to combine the extensive effects of Neopixel with better visibility during the day, there’s also a Daylight Neopixel blade. It still features Neopixel lighting, but also incorporates a colored layer that ensures the chosen base color remains clearly visible in bright ambient light. This type of blade is particularly appealing to cosplayers and users who frequently use their lightsabers outdoors.
30. What is an extra-bright Neopixel blade?
For those looking for maximum brightness, there is also an extra-bright Neopixel sword blade. This version uses additional LED lighting to further increase the blade's brightness. This results in:
very bright colors;
high visibility;
an impressive effect on video;
Plenty of light for cosplay and displays.
The extra-bright Neopixel blade is primarily intended for users who prioritize visual impact over having the lightest possible setup.
31. What is a Crackle blade?
A Crackle blade primarily changes the appearance of the lightsaber. Instead of the completely smooth appearance of a normal lightsaber blade, this blade has a striking pattern that gives the light a more fragmented, electric, or crackle-like appearance.
This is particularly interesting for:
unique custom lightsabers;
Sith-inspired designs;
cosplay;
photography;
display;
users who want something other than a standard blade.

32. When should you replace a lightsaber blade?
A polycarbonate sword blade can last a long time under normal use. However, during intense dueling, signs of wear will appear over time. Minor cosmetic scratches do not necessarily mean that the blade needs to be replaced.
However, if you notice a visible crack, severe warping, or structural damage, do not use the blade for intense duels until you are certain it is still safe and sturdy. At Neopixel, electronic damage may also be a reason to replace the blade.
33. How do you prevent damage to your lightsaber blade?
A few simple habits will help keep your blade looking good:
Make sure to leave enough space around you during spinning;
Check the mounting screws before heavy use;
Do not drag the physical blade across rough floors;
Do not store it under heavy objects;
The blade and hilt should preferably be protected during transport, such as in a saber case
Gently clean dirt and stains;
Do not use a saber to deliberately strike walls, metal, or hard objects.
Even though lightsaber blades are strong, they are still tools that can wear out under repeated extreme stress.

Are you unsure, and have you never used a full-size lightsaber before? In that case, the standard size that comes with the saber you choose is usually the safest option. Are you mainly looking to:
A classic look and maximum range?
In that case, opt for a longer blade, such as 92 cm.
More maneuverability, spinning, or a more compact setup?
In that case, 82 cm might be more comfortable.
Use a saber staff or two sabers at the same time?
In that case, shorter blades are often easier to control.
How can I make a specific character replica as convincing as possible?
Don't just look at the blade; pay particular attention to the ratio between the hilt, the visible blade length, and the total length of the saber.
And remember: part of the blade is hidden inside the hilt. So always add the blade length and the hilt length, then subtract the blade depth to determine the actual total length.
