How is a lightsaber made
Building your own lightsaber is an important ritual during Jedi training. Younglings seek their kyber crystal early on during The Gathering on Ilum, then build their weapon under Professor Huyang’s guidance. This does not happen only after they have completed their Jedi training. But what components make up a lightsaber? We explain them below.
Making a lightsaber
Everything begins with the discovery of a kyber crystal. This crystal can be found in remote and dangerous locations like the planet Ilum or the Jedha Desert. The crystal chooses the Jedi, so the Jedi must have a strong connection to the Force to hear the crystal's call. The crystal and the Jedi are attuned to each other. Besides the kyber crystal, a lightsaber consists of:
- the hilt (handle)
- the diatium energy cell
- emitter
- lenses and focusing crystals
The kyber crystal forms the heart of the lightsaber and can be found in various colors. The diatium energy cell serves as an energy source that can activate the crystal on demand. When the Jedi presses the button on his hilt, the diatium energy cell sends energy to the crystal, activating the laser.
The blade emitter sits at the top of the hilt, where the blade emerges from the handle. It is not an exhaust at the back. Together with the kyber crystal, power cell and focusing components, the emitter forms the system that produces the recognizable energy blade.
The lenses and focusing crystals also influence this. They shape and direct the lightsaber's light. These components create a focused and powerful beam of energy. The lenses shape the energy plasma that emanates from the emitter, and the focusing crystals help direct the energy.
The hilt is the handle into which the components are incorporated. Components and elements are incorporated here that reflect the Jedi's personality, have symbolic meaning, or meet specific needs. Jedi and Sith can design and customize their own hilts entirely to their liking. A hilt can therefore vary greatly in shape, size, material, and possess additional features.
A personal process
Crafting a lightsaber is a personal process, each component tailored to the Jedi who creates it. Symbolic and personal elements are often incorporated into the lightsaber's hilt. The shape, size, and materials all serve the Jedi's personal preferences and needs. Once the hilt is complete, the kyber crystal can be inserted. This permanently connects the crystal to the wielder. This process activates the crystal, allowing the lightsaber to be used. The Jedi now begins the next phase and continuum of their career: learning and mastering their own unique weapon. Crafting a lightsaber is not just a technical process; it is an emotional and spiritual journey for every Padawan.
A lightsaber is much more than just a powerful weapon. It's part of the philosophy, beliefs, and personality of the wielder. An iconic object and a symbol of the Force.
