The Greatest Collector: General Grievous

General Grievous is a well-known and feared adversary. His unique skills and strength make him an iconic character in the galaxy far, far away. His most defining characteristic, however, is his impressive collection of lightsabers . Will you become one of them?

About General Grievous

Grievous was neither a Jedi nor a Sith apprentice. General Grievous was originally the Kaleesh warlord Qymaen jai Sheelal, one of the most respected leaders on his planet, Kalee. However, during the Huk War, he was seriously injured and rescued by Count Dooku. Dooku saw a unique opportunity in Grievous and had his body transformed through cybernetic modifications and enhancements. This made him more powerful, faster, and more agile, but also less human. His fighting style became even more ruthless as a result.

Grievous was appointed commander of the Separatist Army. His warfare expertise and unique ability to wield lightsabers made him a formidable opponent.

Grievous' fighting style

While Grievous isn't a Sith, he falls outside the rule that there can only ever be two (a Sith and an apprentice). Dooku, however, trained Grievous in the use of lightsabers. Thanks to his cybernetic enhancements, including four arms, Grievous could wield multiple lightsabers simultaneously. This unique fighting style, known as Quad-Wielding, quickly made him a notorious and feared opponent for many Jedi.

Grievous could independently move his four arms, and combined with his unparalleled strength and speed, he overpowered even the most experienced Jedi Knights. His fighting style is fearless, ferocious, aggressive, and unpredictable, making him a formidable opponent. For those seeking to understand how this translates to wielding a lightsaber in combat, Grievous's style offers a fascinating study in power and technique.

Grievous and his collection

Because he himself was neither a Jedi nor a Sith, Grievous didn't create his own lightsaber. Instead, he developed an obsession with the lightsabers of the Jedi he defeated. He was known for taking his opponents' lightsabers as trophies after each victory. He then used these weapons to defeat new Jedi and add their lightsabers to his collection. Everywhere he went, he left a trail of deceased Jedi. His collection therefore includes many different lightsabers, each with a unique story.

The confrontation at Utapau

During the battle between General Grievous and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith, Grievous is seen fighting with four lightsabers from his collection. According to the book Star Wars: Lightsabers: A Guide to Weapons of the Force (2010), these lightsabers originally belonged to the Jedi Pablo-Jill, Adi Gallia, Roron Corobb, and Shaak Ti. He lets his cape fall from his shoulders and charges at Obi-Wan Kenobi with several menacing spins. His quad-wielding skills are fully utilized, but while Grievous continues to attack with brute force, Obi-Wan uses his analytical skills to discover Grievous's weaknesses.

The cybernetic enhancements that made Grievous stronger also had a downside. They made him more vulnerable to strategic attacks, something Obi-Wan cleverly exploited. This duel perfectly illustrates how technology and engineering can enhance each other, but also how vulnerable they can be in the hands of a skilled opponent.
