Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens

What lightsabers do you see in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens? The blue Skywalker weapon comes into the hands of Finn and Rey, while Kylo Ren fights with his rough red crossguard lightsaber. These two designs connect the new generation to a history that they only partially understand. This guide helps to keep the characters and their weapons apart and refers to matching KenJo Sabers models, without mistakenly presenting her later design as her Episode VII lightsaber.

      What's The Force Awakens about?

Luke Skywalker has disappeared. The Resistance and the First Order are both searching for clues that can lead to him. At Jakku, scavenger Rey meets the droid BB-8 and the runaway stormtrooper Finn. Their flight brings them to Han Solo and then in the middle of the battle around Starkiller Base. Rey discovers that the Force plays a role in her own life, while Kylo Ren tries to deal with the family ties that connect him to his former identity. An old lightsaber forms the tangible link between these stories.

What are the lightsabers found in The Force Awakens?

The most important ones are the blue weapon previously owned by Anakin and Luke and Kylo Ren's red lightsaber with two side openings. Finn uses the blue lightsaber before Rey meets Kylo. Luke is found at the end, but does not fight a lightsaber duel. Rey's own yellow lightsaber appears much later, at the end of Episode IX.

Rey: From Jakku to the Skywalker Lightsaber

Rey has learned to survive with few resources and relies on her own practical skills. At Maz Kanata she is confronted with a weapon that carries a past that is greater than her own world. During the battle on Starkiller Base she takes on the blue lightsaber and takes an important step in her discovery of the Force.

For the Skywalker line you can compare Saga to the other Skywalker-inspired Saga versions. Their product details are part of different interpretations of the handle. The character history explains why one weapon can come back to several generations, but does not automatically make the individual retail models identical.

Honor is linked to Rey, but refers to her own later design. That model is interesting for a collection that follows her entire development; it is not the blue heirloom with which she fights in The Force Awakens. That distinction prevents a wrong choice when you want to depict a particular scene.

Finn: Use a lightsaber without Jedi training

Finn turns away from the First Order and has to learn to choose for himself what he's fighting for. He uses the Skywalker Lightsaber to defend himself and to protect Rey. His courage is independent of a formal Jedi education. If you're looking for Finn's lightsaber from Episode VII, then you're not looking for a separate new handle: it's the same blue weapon Rey later uses.

Kylo Ren and the dark side

Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, born Ben Solo. He tries to cling to Darth Vader's legacy. His appearance and lightsaber express this tension: dark, threatening and visibly restless. The crossguard makes him immediately recognizable, even when you only see the silhouette of the weapon.

View Crossguard as Kylo Ren-inspired lightsaber and CrossGuard Weathered for a weathered version. The Kylo Ren-helmet is a contextual addition to a costume or display. Compare the technical characteristics of the chosen version; the crackling energy of the film weapon is different from the finish of the physical handle.

Which Sith are in The Force Awakens?

Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke are users of the dark side, but are not simply presented as two Sith Lords. Kylo Ren is neither Jedi nor Sith according to the official character description. Darth Vader belongs to the past and has already died by this period. His damaged mask has meaning for Kylo, but Vader does not enter a new duel in Episode VII.

For the military world around Kylo the First Order Trooper helmet fits. However, a stormtrooper is not a Force user: the helmet complements the First Order theme, not the evidence of a Jedi or Sith identity.

      Episode VII FAQs

Does Rey already have her yellow lightsaber here?

No. In this film she uses the blue Skywalker lightsaber. We will discuss her own later weapon in the The Rise of Skywalker collection.

Why is a crossguard lightsaber so recognizable?

Next to the main blade, Kylo's design has two lateral energy vents, giving it the shape of a cross and distinguishing it from the single-blade Skywalker lightsaber.
