Cal Kestis' lightsabers: from Fallen Order to Jedi: Survivor

Cal Kestis starts out with his master Jaro Tapal's damaged lightsaber and gradually turns it into a personal, customisable Jedi weapon. In Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, he reconnects with the Force. In Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, his skills develop further with additional combat stances. Blue is the recognisable default blade colour, but players can also change colours and parts.

What happens to Jaro's original lightsaber? How do the games differ, and which KenJo model matches your favourite version? Here we compare Cal's story with the choices available in gameplay. Spoiler warning: this guide discusses both games.

Who is Cal Kestis?

Cal Kestis is a Jedi who survives Order 66 as a Padawan. His master Jaro Tapal protects him when their clone troopers turn against them. Cal escapes to Bracca, works as a scrapper and hides his Force abilities to avoid the Empire.

When he saves his friend Prauf, his powers are exposed and the Inquisitors begin hunting him. With the help of Cere Junda, Greez Dritus, Merrin and droid BD-1, he finds new allies and reasons to keep fighting.

Cal's unusual connection to the Force

Cal can experience echoes of the past through an ability called psychometry. This is different from his Force Slow ability, which allows him to slow enemies and objects. It does not mean that he can freely stop the entire flow of time.

His story takes place while the Empire hunts surviving Jedi. The threat of Darth Vader shows just how dangerous that period is.

Jaro Tapal's legacy

In Fallen Order, Cal carries the damaged lightsaber of his master, Jaro Tapal. Jaro used a double-bladed weapon, and its surviving hilt is a reminder of Cal's escape and loss.

The long body, fine ribs on the grip and broken-looking end give the saber an unmistakable appearance. Rather than a pristine collector's piece, it looks like a weapon with a history.

Building a weapon of his own

During the game, Cal repairs and modifies his lightsaber. After his kyber crystal breaks, he travels to Ilum to find a new one and rebuilds the weapon using elements connected to both Jaro Tapal and Cere Junda.

He gains access to single- and double-bladed configurations. Later, he can briefly split the saber for two-weapon attacks. That is not quite the same as the fully developed dual-wield stance in Jedi: Survivor.

What changes in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor?

Jedi: Survivor takes place five years after Fallen Order. Cal is more experienced, but the struggle against the Empire and his responsibilities to others have grown.

Players can choose between five combat stances:

StanceHow Cal fights
SingleOne lightsaber, balancing offense and defense.
Double-bladedA saberstaff with two blades, useful against groups.
Dual wieldTwo separate lightsabers for fast, aggressive attacks.
BlasterA lightsaber paired with a blaster for ranged options.
CrossguardA heavier, more deliberate style built around powerful strikes.

Switching between weapons in a game does not mean that every real-life replica can do the same. Check whether a physical hilt is designed to connect to another saber or be used separately.

What colour is Cal Kestis' lightsaber?

Blue is his recognisable default colour, but the games let you customise it. Your Cal can wield other blade colours without those player choices becoming a fixed part of the story. The same applies to optional emitters, materials and other components.

In Jedi: Survivor, you can change parts, materials and blade colour at a workbench. For inspiration, see our lightsaber colour guide.

Why does his hilt look damaged?

The original hilt reflects what happened to Jaro Tapal. When comparing replicas, look for the distinctive broken-end design and differences between sculpted damage and applied weathering.

A weathered replica is deliberately finished to look used; it is not actually a damaged movie prop. Hand-applied finishes may vary between individual sabers.

Which KenJo lightsaber suits Cal Kestis?

Our Cal Kestis lightsaber collection features designs inspired by his hilt. First decide whether you prefer a single saber, a weathered finish or a two-hilt staff.

The Phoenix: the recognisable single saber

The Phoenix has finely ribbed grip details, long emitter plates and a broken-looking pommel. It comes in black and matte silver. It is a strong match for fans who want the classic single-hilt silhouette.

Phoenix Staff: two sabers or one staff

The black Phoenix Staff is made up of two separate hilts and includes a connector. Use them individually or join them into a double-bladed staff, making this model attractive for fans of Cal's double-bladed and dual-wield stances.

Frequently asked questions

Did Cal Kestis originally use Jaro Tapal's saber?

Yes. Cal begins with his master's damaged weapon and later rebuilds a saber with components linked to Cere Junda.

Is Cal Kestis part of official Star Wars canon?

Yes. Cal and the story of Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor belong to official Star Wars continuity. Custom blade colours and parts are gameplay options and are not all established story events.

Does Cal Kestis appear in a film or TV series?

His main story comes from the two Star Wars Jedi games, not a film or series of the same name. Actor Cameron Monaghan portrays Cal in the games.

Does Cal always use a blue lightsaber?

Blue is the familiar default colour. Players may choose other colours, but those options do not establish a different permanent story colour.

Can Cal use two sabers in Fallen Order?

Later in that game he uses short attacks with a split saber. Jedi: Survivor makes dual wield a separate combat stance.

Which KenJo saber can be a staff or two separate weapons?

The black Phoenix Staff includes two hilts and a connector, so you can use it in both configurations. This is specific to that model, not every Phoenix variant.
