The greatest collector: General Grievous
General Grievous is a widely known and feared adversary. His unique skills and strength make him an iconic character in the galaxy far and wide. Most distinctive about him, however, is his impressive collection of lightsabers. Will you too become such a collector?
About General Grievous
Grievous was not a Jedi, nor is he a Sith apprentice. General Grievous was originally the Kaleesh warlord Qymaen jai Sheelal, one of the most respected leaders on his planet Kalee. During the Huk War, however, he was seriously injured and was rescued by Count Dooku. Dooku saw a unique opportunity in Grievous and had his body transformed through cybernetic modifications and enhancements. This made him more powerful, faster and more agile, but also less human. His fighting style became extra ruthless as a result.
Grievous was appointed commander of the Separatist army. His knowledge of warfare as a warrior and his unique ability to use lightsabers made him a formidable opponent.
The fighting style of Grievous
Although Grievous is not a Sith, he falls outside the rule that there can always be only two (a Sith and an apprentice). However, Dooku trained Grievous in the use of lightsabers. His cybernetic adaptations, including four arms, allowed Grievous to wield multiple lightsabers at once. This unique fighting style, known as Quad-Wielding, quickly made him a notorious and feared opponent for many a Jedi.
Grievous could move his four arms separately, and combined with his unmatched strength and speed, he was able to overpower even the most experienced Jedi Knights. His fighting style was fearless, wild, aggressive and unpredictable, which made him a formidable opponent. For those who want to understand how this translates to wielding a lightsaber in combat, bhe style offers a fascinating study in strength and technique.
Grievous and his collection
Not being a Jedi or Sith himself, Grievous did not create his own lightsaber. Instead, he developed an obsession with the lightsabers of the Jedi he defeated. He was known to take his opponents' lightsabers as trophies after each victory. He then used these weapons to defeat new Jedi and add their lightsabers to his collection. Everywhere he went, he left a trail of deceased Jedi. His collection therefore includes many different lightsabers, each with a unique story.

The Confrontation on Utapau
During the fight between General Grievous and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith, we see Grievous fighting with four lightsabers from his collection. According to the book Star Wars: Lightsabers: A Guide to Weapons of the Force (2010), these lightsabers originally belonged to the Jedi Pablo-Jill, Adi Gallia, Roron Corobb and Shaak Ti. He drops his cape from his shoulders and storms towards Obi-Wan Kenobi with multiple menacing twists and turns. His quad-wielding skills come into full play, but while Grievous continues to attack with brute force, Obi-Wan uses his analytical skills to discover Grievous' weaknesses.
The cybernetic adaptations that made Grievous stronger also had their downside. They made him more vulnerable to strategic attacks, something Obi-Wan cleverly exploited. This duel shows perfectly how technology and engineering can reinforce each other, but also how vulnerable they can be in the hands of a skilled opponent.
